On August 14, the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia published the results of the Amulsar Gold Mine Operations and Environmental Impact Assessment. The examination was conducted by the Lebanese company “ELARD”, for which US $ 396 900 (about 189,7 million drams) was provided. The examination concludes with a number of conditions. Only in case of meeting them, it will be possible to state that the operation of the mine will cause minimal damage to nature and humans.
On the same day, after publishing the results of the assessment, residents of Jermuk began a spontaneous march and a car march, declaring that the Investigative Committee had a manipulative approach, emphasizing only the positive findings of the assessment.
The Government session of August 15 was followed by environmentalists’ protest. During the Government session, Hayk Grigoryan, the Chairman of the Investigative Committee, presented three important points (according to them) of the assessment. Environmentalists, meanwhile, were presenting their opinion on the examination in front of the Government building, citing the parts of the report that highlighted the negative impacts of the mine operation. The government is still planning to study the document, and the RA Investigative Committee notes that there is no reason to prosecute anyone in the criminal case that is under investigation for more than one year.
