The earthquakes recorded in Armenia in March reignited discussions on the topic. In the morning of March 8, an earthquake occurred 6 km from the town of Spitak, with a magnitude of 6-7 at the epicenter. The tremors were felt in the Lori, Shirak, and Tavush regions with an intensity of 4-6.
According to Armenia’s Territorial Seismic Protection Service at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 45 aftershocks were recorded following the initial quake, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 3.2 and was located 9 km from Spitak.
A few days later, on March 12, tremors were also recorded 13 km from Yerevan, with a magnitude of 2.7.
The earthquakes this month have once again raised the issue of seismic resilience in Armenia and around, prompting a closer look at the country’s preparedness for strong shocks. The available data is not reassuring.
